The role of the Hunter Drug Advisory Service (HDAS) is briefly described. The background of problem drinking clients is outlined and their sources of referral listed. HDAS' approach to counselling problem drinkers is discussed with emphasis placed on the first interview and its importance. The rationale for largely avoiding the use of the alcoholism concept in HDAS counselling is examined. Finally, the issue of client treatment after the first interview is described with particular reference to the role of Alcoholics Anonymous.
