A description is given of the structure and functioning of teams and of team building and maintenance arising out of six years' experience of a small community‐based multidisciplinary working group. A model is used to illustrate progress from a starting point of multiple individual differences which have the potential for strength and conflict, towards the development of teamship characterised by overall effective performance and satisfaction, up a series of steps akin fo Maslow's hierarchy of needs and to the various aspects of “health”. Specific ways in which teamship has been sought and expressed by the groups, including examples of exercises used in its regular team building in developing teamwork are listed, emphasizing the critical importance of the style of control exerted and tolerated by the group's leader and the host organization.
