Abstract A controlled trial has evaluated the effectiveness of supervisor training for an industrial alcohol program. A control group of 1 639 staff had an alcohol policy only; a second group of 1 416 staff had the policy plus a 1‐day training course for supervisors; and a third group of 1 541 had the policy plus a 1‐day training course for supervisors plus a 2‐hour education session for all staff. After nearly two years there were three, seven and four referrals respectively, and no substantial differences in absenteeism or accident rates between the three areas. The results and implications are discussed.
