In alcoholics an association is demonstrated between partial gastrectomy and the Wernicke‐Korsakoff syndrome. Comparing Wernicke‐Korsakoff patients who have undergone partial gastrectomy with those who have not, indicated no general difference in thiamin absorption as determined by 35 S‐thiamin absorption testing. Those gastrectomized were more likely to have married, to have the continued support of their families and probably for this reason, ultimately to be discharged from hospital. Mechanisms whereby partial gastrectomy may facilitate the development of alcohol dependency are discussed and the need to avoid this operation in those with a drinking history emphasised.
