A non‐medical detoxification centre was established at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 1981. In the first six months, 499 patients were admitted a total of 906 times: 22% of admissions were referred by medical officers and 49% of patients were referred for further rehabilitation. Only 6% of admissions needed to be referred to the Emergency Department for medical examination. Non‐medical detoxification units can complement the other services offered at a general hospital.
