Abstract This paper was written in response to the fact that Volume 10, No. 2 of BERJ did not contain a single paper from a teacher currently teaching in a school. There comes a point when you can't just moan about a situation, you have to do something, and this paper is that something. It attempts to describe some of the main reasons for the dominance of ‘outsiders' in school‐based research and suggests that this is not a good thing. Possible ways of improving the situation are discussed but no offence is meant to any person living, dead or in suspended animation.
