Following suggestions by Easthope et al the authors consider possible criteria in the practical application of the concepts ‘Classification’ and ‘Framing’ exemplified in a college of education. They conclude that the concepts require some revision to take account of the realities of the power structure in educational organisations and that Bernstein may be unwittingly providing an excellent defence fur a social structure based on a ‘mechanic’ form of solidarity which outwardly may appear to be ‘organic’.
