The author focuses mainly on two points: the existence of precursors of the theory of mind in babies and the metacognitive role of mothering. With respect to precursors, he points out that even very young infants are capable of looking in the same direction their mothers are looking in and, more generally, have a theory of behavior before having a theory of mind. With respect to the second topic, the issue is apparently to determine how the shift takes place between a situation where the mother attributes capabilities to her infant that she knows the baby does not have, in order for him or her to make progress, and a first form of mastery by the baby of others' thoughts.
