Methodological problems associated with the assessment of change in developmental research are discussed. The paper emphasizes the problems associated with response equivalence in ontogenetic comparisons and the appropriateness of traditional research designs to handle the measurement of change. Curve fitting techniques and time‐series statistics are suggested as possible alternatives to handle the problems associated with estimating developmental functions.
