During the past several years, the International Union of Psychological Science has undertaken a number of projects in which the special capabilities of psychologists have been brought to bear on matters of general interest to the world community. Some of these, e.g. , “Social Implications of the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy”, “The Origin and Development of National Stereotypes”, have been supported by UNESCO. Others have been made possible by grants from public and private foundations. All have involved the cooperative efforts by psychologists in many parts of the world. In the paragraphs which follow we will report on the planning of another project, in collaboration with colleagues in Pakistan, directed toward the application of new educational techniques to solving problems of literacy training.
