Significance LXRs are critical regulators of hepatic metabolism and function, but their mechanisms of action at the genome level are incompletely understood. We performed integrated analysis of genome-wide chromatin accessibility, gene expression, and transcription factor binding. We reveal distinct mechanisms of LXR transcriptional regulation of both metabolic and nonmetabolic genes in liver. We show that LXR can both activate and repress genes and that LXR binding impacts the activity of other transcription factors.
