The Advanced Institute of Management (AIM) is a UK research initiative, funded primarily by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to run in the first instance from 2002 to 2006. It primarily supports a wide range of fellows undertaking management research often on a team and multi‐disciplinary basis. The paper looks more closely at one of the major strands of AIM research: that related to productivity and performance of the UK economy in an international economy. We consider the results and implications of a range of studies that have considered the potential impact of management in this area. We also consider some of the broader questions related to the challenges of undertaking research which is both of high quality and also achieves impact in the worlds of policy and practice and the nature of the initiative itself.
