In this study, based on the shipborne high‐frequency (HF) surface wave radar target detection application, the first‐order ocean surface cross‐section for the shipborne HF surface wave radar is simulated, and the relationship between the sea clutter widening characteristics and platform speed is analysed. Then, the relationship between the target echo characteristics of shipborne HF surface wave radar with the platform speed and sails direction is analysed. Finally, combined with the characteristics of the target and sea clutter, a new scheme of target detection for the shipborne radar is proposed. That is, by changing the course of the shipborne platform motion, the target is separated from the widened sea clutter, thereby improving the target‐detection performance of the shipborne HF surface wave radar.
