Large aperture sparse array has the ability of mainlobe interference suppression. However, sparse array causes grating lobe problem. If the array is steering at the target and the mainlobe interference is located at the grating lobe, the adaptive filter will produce a grating lobe zero phenomenon that severely reduce the target energy. This study proposes a design approach of large aperture sparse array for mainlobe interference cancellation. By properly designing the number of auxiliary receiving antennas, the baseline of the large aperture sparse array, the aperture of auxiliary receiving antennas, the position of auxiliary receiving antennas and carrier frequency of radar transmitting signal, the grating lobes can be suppressed effectively, thus decreasing the system complexity and cost while cancelling the mainlobe interference. Simulations and field experiments have illustrated the effectiveness of the proposed design approach.
