A square ring shaped planar slot antenna for dual‐polarised applications is presented and experimentally investigated. Each arm of the slot has a stepped rectangular section. Two of the adjacent arms are excited using microstrip feed lines printed on the other side of the substrate. To improve the isolation, a kite shaped slot stub is placed at the centre of the ring and is connected to one of its corners. The antenna has an impedance bandwidth from 3.0 to 12.0 GHz while the isolation is better than 20 dB. The dual polarisation is demonstrated by means of an aperture electric field plot. The antenna has a peak gain varying from 4 to 6 dBi. To check the diversity performance, the envelope correlation coefficient is calculated and found to be within the threshold limit. The antenna will be useful for applications requiring dual polarisation over the ultra‐wide bandwidth with good isolation.
