A multiband planar antenna is proposed for mobile handsets. The multiband antenna covers four frequency bands: 696–970 MHz for Long Term Evolution (LTE) 700, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) 850/900; 1683–2700 MHz for GSM 1800/1900, Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) 2100, LTE 2300/2600, WLAN 2.4 GHz, WiMAX 2.5 GHz; 3070–3755 MHz for WiMAX 3.5 GHz; and 4590–7604 MHz for WLAN/WiMAX 5.2/5.8 GHz and WiMAX 5.5 GHz. The planar antenna consists of a U‐shaped monopole coupling with an S‐shaped strip, a clip‐shaped monopole with a meander line coupling with an inverted‐C strip, an X‐shaped monopole, and an F‐shaped monopole. The multiband antenna has a low profile and is printed on a thin substrate, suitable for ultra‐slim smartphone applications.
