This study proposes a new method for stabilising disturbed power systems using wide‐area measurement and controllable devices. A new control algorithm based on kinetic energy is proposed to be applied on the controllers to improve the first swing stability of power systems following large disturbances while also damping the subsequent inter‐area oscillations. The wide‐area controller is implemented by using the Kalman filter estimation of the area‐based model of the system, to stabilise the inter‐area dynamic and improve the stability margin of the system. The proposed approach is simulated on several test systems and the results show significant improvement in the first swing and damping stability of the test systems.
