An advanced soft‐output Viterbi algorithm detector aided by extrinsic information resources is proposed for bit‐patterned media recording (BPMR) systems. These BPMR systems offer significant advantages over conventional magnetic recording systems. However, the performance system is significantly affected by a two‐dimensional interference. The proposed method improves the channel detection output under the assistance of a variety of extrinsic information sources. Especially, combining the proposed model with an adaptive scheme for extrinsic information to enhance system performance is examined. Furthermore, evaluating the worth of extrinsic information in the different signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) conditions is also considered in this work. The results show that the SNR gains from the proposed model are about 4 dB compared to conventional solutions at non‐misregistration.
