The radiation recovery effect on sensing fibre in Brillouin optical time‐domain reflectometer (BOTDR) has been experimentally investigated. In the experiment, three kinds of commercial single‐mode G.652.D fibres: Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable, Corning and Fujikura have been used as sensing fibre in BOTDR system. After 200 Gy dose gamma‐ray radiation absorbed by sensing fibre, the performance of BOTDR at different time intervals has been tested. Moreover, by analysing Brillouin gain spectra along with fibre sample, the recovery in radiation‐induced attenuation, the variation of Brillouin frequency shift and the variation of stress coefficient are characterised. The results will be helpful for the error correction in the simulation experiment and are a reliable basis for the introduction of BOTDR into the space station.
