The sum rate for uplink multiple‐input multiple‐output non‐orthogonal multiple access (MIMO‐NOMA) channel is derived over a Rayleigh fading environment. Then, an optimal cluster formation and power control technique is jointly designed to maximise the sum rate under power and user rate constraints. Besides, a near‐optimal algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational efforts significantly. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of presented schemes compared with the reference MIMO‐NOMA and multiuser MIMO systems.
