A spatial modulation (SM) using double multi‐strata space–time codes (MSSTC) is proposed, which will be called D‐MSSTC‐SM. Uneven transmit power and phase are allocated to layers of each MSSTC and rotation angles are assigned to SM codebooks to maximise the minimum coding gain distance of D‐MSSTC‐SM. It is observed that the proposed D‐MSSTC‐SM enables higher spectral efficiency and lower error probability than other conventional schemes.
