The extended target detection problem for OFDM cognitive radar is considered. A subcarrier‐modulation method is proposed to improve the detection performance under peak‐to‐average power ratio (PAPR) constraint. The optimised weights are designed by semi‐definition relaxation followed with Gaussian randomisation. The simulation results show that the proposed method achieves great improvement in both signal‐to‐inference‐plus‐noise ratio and PAPR while striking a good balance between the two performances.
