A compact, wideband and high gain anisotropic rectangular dielectric resonator antenna is reported. This antenna consists of a multilayer dielectric structure which emulates uniaxial anisotropy and a relatively tall feed probe that acts both as a perfect electric conductor symmetry plane and the excitation of the higher order radiating mode. The multilayer structure and the tall feed probe are responsible for producing wide impedance bandwidth and size reduction, respectively. Measured results indicate that more than 50% size reduction is achieved without complicating the dielectric resonator antennas structure. Moreover, a wide impedance bandwidth of 19.4% along with a maximum gain of 8.1 dB is measured.
