Considering coordinated multipoint joint transmission in a user‐centric fashion in an ultra‐dense network, performance analysis is conducted from a network perspective with respect to the user's performance gain and the access point's (AP's) backhaul burden. First, the ergodic capacity (EC) of a typical user is characterised. Secondly, per‐AP backhaul consumption is explicitly quantified and the successful serving probability of a typical AP is proposed to capture its robustness to limited backhaul capacity. Finally, effective EC to weigh performance gain and backhaul consumption simultaneously is propounded. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed metrics and reinforce that a comparatively small size is preferable in practice.
