Inter‐prediction in high‐efficiency video coding (HEVC) provides higher coding efficiency at the expense of increased computational complexity compared with previous video coding standards. Presented is an efficient inter‐prediction algorithm based on prediction unit pruning to reduce the computational load. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves about 11% additional reduction in the inter‐mode decision time when applied to a coding unit pruning algorithm.
