A simple rectangular microstrip antenna with an omnidirectional conical beam pattern (OCBP) is proposed. The higher‐order TM 02 and TM 20 modes are excited in phase and with equal amplitude by two probes to generate an omnidirectional pattern. The method to suppress mutual coupling between the two ports is introduced. A prototype antenna is designed, fabricated and measured, and the measured results agree well with the simulated results. The proposed antenna has an omnidirectional pattern in the azimuth plane and peaks at an elevation of 55°. The OCBP of the proposed antenna makes it very suitable for mobile communication systems.
