A novel chrominance just‐noticeable‐distortion (JND) model based on human colour perception is proposed. The human colour perception based on the density of cones in the retina is quantitatively modelled, and the chrominance JND model using the Gaussian distribution is obtained. To verify its superiority, the chrominance JND model is applied to stereo video coding, which adopts the residual preprocessor to deal with the residuals of stereo videos. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed chrominance JND model significantly saves bit rate without loss of perceptual quality in stereo videos.
