A method for optimisation of IEEE 802.3az energy‐efficient Ethernet networks is proposed. To overcome the timing limitations imposed by the standard, the packets are stored in a buffer until the criteria for its emptying are met. It is shown that this approach leads to greater energy savings while guaranteeing the desired level of quality of service, expressed by a maximal packet delay.
