A partial‐forward scheme for the half‐duplex relay system is proposed, which transmits only a part of codewords by considering code and channel characteristics at the relay. Specifically, two partial cooperation schemes, decode‐and‐partial‐forward and amplify‐and‐partial‐forward schemes are considered and to overcome the shortcomings of these schemes an adaptive partial‐forward scheme is proposed which can be flexibly applied according to the given environment. Also, the criteria on how to select a part of the codeword bits at the relay are derived. Furthermore, the optimisation of the time‐division parameters to obtain the performance improvement is investigated.
