We describe a technique for interactivelyrendering diffuse scenes with near‐field area lighting byintroducing a new light type called VAL (Virtual arealight). The VALs are generated via the subdivision of theprimary planar luminaire, and near‐field area lighting effectscan be simulated directly from the geometric andradiometric information of these VALs. To ensure a highfidelity of soft shadows, we propose the multi‐PCF (Percentagecloser filter) algorithm which evaluates visibilitythrough several PCF values of each VAL. Experimentalresults reveal that our approach can render visually convincingnear‐field area lighting effects as well as soft shadowswithout any precomputation. Our strategy also enableshigh‐quality direct illumination results in fully dynamicscenes under both time‐varying and spatially‐varying arealighting conditions in the order of milliseconds.
