An account is given of a field test suitable for evaluating insect repellents. Our test insect was Culicoides impunctatus . The test is based on the avoidance of a test substance placed within a circular chamber. It appears to be reliable and reproducible. The different components of oil of Myrica gale have been investigated and a hierarchy of activity is revealed, limonene and terpenine‐4‐ol being at the extremes of the range of activity.
