Sexual education remains an extremely sensitive topic in Armenian society, especially in rural areas. Parents are too shy to provide their own children with adequate information, causing them to depend on what they learn on the street, from other children, or from television. The National Program on Reproductive Health has directed most of its activities at improving clinical family planning and reproductive health services, while very little has been done to raise public awareness, or to improve knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to these issues. To fill this gap, Oxfam Armenia, through its local partner, People for a Healthy Lifestyle is starting a reproductive health and family planning program directed at young people, specifically adolescents aged 15-17 years in the rural areas of Armenia. The program aims to raise awareness about reproductive health and rights, and to discourage behavior and practices, which pose health risks. The topics covered are family planning, sexually transmitted disease/AIDS prevention, psychological aspects of sexuality, reproductive rights, and gender issues. The Government of Armenia will tailor its nationwide program ¿Life Knowledge¿ on the basis of the experiences gained from the Oxfam Armenia project.
