There is no evidence of ultrastructural damage as assessed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy on the exposure of group A and AB human platelets to the appropriate anti‐A and anti‐AB alloantibody and complement. There was also no evidence of platelet aggregation under the above circumstances. These in vitro findings support the view that an ABO mismatch is not an absolute contraindication to platelet transfusion.
