This article discusses chronic pain in individuals who are 65 years of age and older. The importance of achieving adequate pain management in geriatric patients is discussed. Factors that limit pain control are listed and explained. Emphasis is placed on what role depression, anxiety, and dementia have in the patient's perception of pain as well as the need to avoid adverse drug reactions in a population that can be complicated to treat for pain.
