This study examined Medicare records to compare the cost and resource utilization in the management of early‐stage prostate cancer in African‐American and White men age 65 years and older. African‐American men undergoing radical prostatectomy or external beam radiation therapy had significantly greater costs than did White men. It is speculated that the greater costs related to radical prostatectomy may be related to unmeasured comorbidity and those greater costs for external beam radiation may reflect a more advanced tumor stage in African‐American men.
