In the Cardiovascular Health Study, 3,332 participants age 65 years and older who were free of chronic disease were followed for over 6.5 years. The vast majority of older adults remained healthy during the follow‐up period. Physical activity, not smoking, lack of obesity, lack of diabetes mellitus, high high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, and lower blood pressure were associated with maintenance of good health in this population. Behavior and risk‐factor modification may be expected to enhance the number of years of healthy living in older people.
