A new fixation method for unmineralized haptophytes is presented. Water samples are fixed with a mixture of Lugol’s solution and glutaraldehyde (final concentration 1% Lugol and 0.25% glutaraldehyde). This method preserves flagella, haptonema, and body scales very well, making light microscopical quantification at the genus level possible as well as species identification in the transmission electron microscope. The method has been tested on cultured material and natural water samples (salinities 5–34 psu).
