Bilirubin adsorption column Medisorba BL‐300 (Kuraray MedicalInc.) for the treatment of hyperbilirubinemia is introduced. Theadsorbent packed in this column is the porous anion exchange resincoated with hydrophilic 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate copolymer in orderto improve blood compatibility. The adsorbent showed a high adsorptionrate for direct bilirubin and indirect bilirubin in patient plasmain vitro. This column is used in plasmaperfusion therapy in clinicaluse. BL‐300 showed high removal rate for direct bilirubin, indirectbilirubin and bile acid in clinical evaluation. BL‐300 is approvedin Japan and it has been used for the treatment of hyperbilirubinemiacaused by many diseases such as liver failure and hepatitis.
