A typical varicella zoster (ophthalmicus) in an incidentally HIV‐infected person is reported in a young man. It was characterized by tense, grouped, vesiculobullous eruptions on a brick‐red base. The diagnosis was substantiated by demonstration of swollen epidermal (balloon) cells with a nucleus/several nuclei containing inclusion bodies. Reticular degeneration was apparant.
