Nursing research has been developing in Europe for over 30 years. Yet it is still a relatively new activity in some countries and extremely variable in a region where countries vary greatly in size, language, culture, politics and socioeconomic status and in the role and status of nursing and healthcare systems. While such diversity limits a comprehensive account of nursing research throughout Europe in a short article, an overall view is given below, based on experience in the UK and participation in the Workgroup of European Nurse Researchers (WENR) * .
