It has been shown that actin genes exhibit distinct tissue and stage‐specific patterns of expression. We have cloned a new β‐actin gene from the teleost zebrafish ( Danio rerio ), a well‐established model for developmental studies, and analysed its expression by Northern blot and in situ hybridization studies. Our results suggest that in adult brain zebrafish, this new gene is expressed during neuronal cell proliferation.
