Out‐of‐plane crack growths were observed in compact tension specimens under static and quasi‐static loading conditions at 650 °C in a nickel based alloy U720Li. The apparent mixed‐mode crack growth behaviour may be explained based on a stability argument. The actual occurrence of the unstable crack growth may depend also on other factors such as the crack growth mechanism, grain size and loading mode.
