Globally, the provision of health care has made an increasing move towards community‐based care over the past decade. Early discharge programs, hospital‐in‐the‐home and community rehabilitation are concepts that have been espoused as solutions to the increasing demands on inpatient facilities. Although there can be no doubt that reduced length of hospital stays has benefits to the health‐care system, questions still remain as to whether the services provided in the community are adequate to meet the needs of the patients who are now encouraged to utilize the community health‐care services. This study examines the deficits between the need for services and the services provided from the perspective of community palliative care in Australia.
