Data files including 50 clinical, biochemical and imaging parameters were obtained from 115 Japanese, 51 Thai and 103 Italian HCC patients; each from one institution. These 50 parameters included the mode of presentation at the onset, past and familial history of liver disease, history of blood transfusion, viral profiles, results of liver function tests, the severity of ‘background’ liver disease, and characteristics of the tumor (maximal diameter and number of cancer nodules and extension). The values were plotted in histograms, or shown in figures, and comparisons were made on the data obtained from different countries. The values were also subjected to analysis of variance, and existence of characteristic features of HCC peculiar to each country was explored.
