Pain is a protective mechanism. Without it we would not know if we were walking on a bed of feathers or a plate of hot coals. Early intervention in the management of pain can prevent unnecessary suffering, agony and prolonged discomfort. Pain depletes the body of its ability to fight which results in a very vulnerable patient. Every patient has the right to pain relief, and every health‐care organization must assure that pain is addressed appropriately.
