Knowledge of the history of remote‐area nursing in Australia is necessary if we are to truly understand the processes that have dictated the boundaries and reality of the scope of practice for today’s RANs (remote‐area nurses). This paper briefly explores and discusses the social context and history of remote‐area nursing in Australia and, in particular, Queensland during the 19th century.
