Summary A Sphaceloma species causing greyish‐white leaf spots of several Salix species is described and illustrated. This is the first record for Europe of the mitosporic fungus identified as Sphaceloma murrayae , which was formerly known to occur only in New Zealand, Argentina and the US. In addition to information on symptoms and hosts, similar fungi occurring on willow, which can be confused with the new fungus are also discussed.
