Abnormalities of the keratinization process result in the clinical signs of crusting and scaling. In the horse, generalized scaling is usually associated with inflammatory disease and is most commonly noted after acute inflammation. Focal areas of abnormal cornification are seen in the horse especially in the mane and tail, the cannon bone region, and at the coronary band. These lesions generally require life‐long management.
