Summary The karyotypes of Pterostichus nigrita (Paykull) and P. rhaeticus Heer are described. Both species have eighteen pairs of autosomes, sex chromosomes which are XO (♂) and XX (♀), plus a variable number of totally heterochromatic B chromosomes. Males may be identified by the form of the inflated endophallus, but the shape of the right paramere is not a reliable character. Females may be identified by the form of the eighth abdominal sternite.
