The emerging ‘life‐course cohorts’ are a powerful new resource in epidemiology. These are cohorts followed from early gestation until the end of life. 1 We shall deal in turn with the history of this phenomenon, the implications for epidemiological research and the consequences for the field of epidemiology itself.
